Sunway Academic Pathways

Sunway International School’s diverse program offerings are one of its attractions. There are two campuses in Kuala Lumpur and Johor. Each campus has slightly different course offerings, but this page mainly introduces the Kuala Lumpur campus. As the only international school in Malaysia, it offers three curricula: Ontario (Canada) Curriculum, International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), and Cambridge (IGCSE) International Programme.

Ontario Curriculum (Ontario Program)

The Ontario Curriculum has three levels: Primary (ages 6-11), Middle (ages 11-14), and Senior (ages 14-17).

Key Features (Primary)

Through hands-on and experiential learning activities, emphasis is placed on strengthening literacy, numeracy, inquiry skills, and growth mindset that form the foundation of academics.

Primary Students

Key Features (Middle)

Balancing academic rigor with creative interests, aimed at smooth transition from elementary to higher education based on literacy, numeracy, and learning skills development. Learning assessment includes observation, conversation, and all outcomes, with attractive support through continuous feedback to help students progress toward their learning goals.

Middle School Students

Key Features (Senior)

Developing decision-making abilities through exploration of areas of interest. In specialized subjects, students learn deeper concepts and develop analysis, synthesis, communication, and research skills, with the main goal of preparing for university admission.

As student support, teachers help students choose appropriate subjects based on their interests, strengths, and future academic and career goals. The goal is to maximize students’ interests and abilities and ensure they are well prepared for their next steps in university and career.

Senior Students

Cambridge (IGCSE) International Programme

This is a globally recognized educational program designed for students to learn from a global perspective while building a foundation for university and career.

Primary School

Years 1-4: Student progress is measured through continuous assessment based on knowledge, understanding, and skills. Assessment includes not only exams but also projects and outcomes from class.

Years 5-6: 70% coursework assessment (including reports, projects, and group work, measuring how critically students think and solve problems) and 30% exam assessment (measuring how well students can apply knowledge within time limits) are combined to thoroughly confirm learning outcomes. Year 6 includes important Checkpoint exams designed to solidify the foundation for advancing to the next year level. Subjects include English, Math, and Science.

Secondary School

Years 7-9: 70% exam assessment (exams assess how well students understand the knowledge and skills learned during the year, with various formats including multiple choice, written questions, and calculations measuring understanding and problem-solving ability) and 30% coursework assessment (students are assessed through projects, reports, group discussions, and experiments in class, measuring not just one-time results but continuous learning and developmental thinking). Comprehensively measuring students’ knowledge and understanding.

Years 10-11: Assessment is 100% exam-based, conducted in the internationally recognized IGCSE format, focusing on specialized content for each subject chosen by students. Students seriously prepare for university admission and professional careers.

  • Features of IGCSE Exams
IGCSE exams are typically final exams based on content learned over two years. Exam formats vary by subject, including written exams, practical exams, and oral exams. Exam results are very important as they significantly impact students’ future education and careers.

International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP)

IBDP is a balanced program aimed at preparing for university and professional studies worldwide, based on over 50 years of educational research and achievement, aimed at developing students with international perspectives.

The program core includes: Theory of Knowledge, which explores “what is knowledge” and considers the role of knowledge in different cultures and perspectives, fostering critical thinking and international perspective; Extended Essay, where students choose a topic based on their interests and write a 4,000-word essay, practically learning university-level research and academic writing skills; and Creativity, Activity, Service, which aims for skills beyond academics and balanced growth through creative activities, exercise, and community service.

Combining internal and external assessment, the program evaluates not only academic skills but also international perspective and cross-cultural understanding, developing abilities useful for university admission and future success.
